TCS - Psychometric Test Explained

Psychometric test is one of the four sections of aptitude test conducted by TCS during selection. Psychometric test contains 150 questions and are to be solved in 30 minutes. These are general personality based questions and are yes/no based. These questions test your ability to answer consistently.
These tests are devised by occupational psychologists and aim of such tests is to select most suitable job applicants.

   People who score high on this factor are usually productive, disciplined and single tasking. People who score low on this factor are often less productive, but can be more flexible, inventive, and capable of handling more tasks at a time.
   


3. Worrying Tendency
   People who score low on this factor are usually calm, relaxed and rational. They may sometimes be perceived as lazy and incapable of taking things seriously. People who score high on this factor are alert, anxious, sometimes worried.
   


4. Openness to Experience
   People who score high on this factor have flare to accept new things and are curious and sometimes unrealistic. People who score low on this factor are down-to-earth and practical and sometimes change obstruct.
   


5. Orientation towards other people
   Cooperative and Submissive type of persons score high on this factor while those who score low on this factor may be competitive, challenging and confrontational.

Speed Reading - Key to Comprehension Problems

In a typical aptitude test, comprehension is one of the major portion besides QA, verbal and others. In comprehension section, you have to master large volumes of information and solve the questions based on them. With speed reading you'll be able to quickly understand the given text and solve the questions in a lot less time.
As the time to solve comprehension questions is same for all, if you are a speed reader, you'll be able to solve more questions in given time span. Below we discuss, how one can increase the reading speed and quickly understand the text.

The most important trick about speed reading is to know what information you want from a document before you start reading it: if you only want an outline of the issue that the document discusses, then you can skim the document quickly and extract only the essential facts. If you need to understand the real detail of the document, then you need to read it slowly enough to understand it fully.

Technical Issues

The reading speed can be enhanced by following these technical improvements:

• Eye span - Increasing the number of words read in each block.


• Fixation - Reducing the length of time spent reading each block.


• Regression - Reducing the number of times your eyes skip back to a previous sentence.

Eye span
Try to increase the number of words that you read at a time: With practice, you'll find you read faster. You may also find that you can increase the number of words in each block by holding the text a little farther than usual from your eyes. The more words you can read in each block, the faster you will read.

Fixation
The minimum length of time needed to read each block is probably only a quarter of a second. By pushing yourself to reduce the time you take, you will get better at picking up information quickly. By working on reducing fixation time for a week or so, you will realise that your reading speed has increased to a great extent.

Regression
Try to reduce the number of times that your eyes skip back to a previous sentence, run a pointer along the line as you read. This could be a finger, or a pen or pencil. Your eyes will follow the tip of your pointer, smoothing the flow of your reading. The speed at which you read using this method will largely depend on the speed at which you move the pointer.

Try to read a daily newspaper and follow these tips and after 10-11 days, you'll observe that your reading speed has almost doubled.

Efficient Reading Practice for comprehension

Comprehension is one of the main portion of any entrance or selection test. The key to succeed in this area is efficient reading. With efficient reading, you'll be able to answer the questions that follow the comprehension easily and will also be able to save time and attempt more questions to have an edge over others.

1. Good readers look over the text at first and note the structure of the text and the sections that might be useful to their reading goal.

Solutions to QA Questions Part1

The solutions to yesterday's QA questions part 1 are given below along with their questions.

1. Q: A farmer built a fence around his 17 cows,in a square shaped region.He used 27 fence poles on each side of the square. How many poles did he need altogether???
   
   A: Here 25 poles Must be there on each side .And around four corners 4 poles will be present. 4*25+4=100+4=104 poles.




2. Q: A group consists of equal number of men and women. Of them 10% of men and 45% of women are unemployed. If a person is randomly selected from the group. Find the probability for the selected person to be an employee.
   
   A: Assume men=100,women=100 then employed men & women r (100-10)+(100-45)=145
   So probability for the selected person to be an employee=145/200=29/40
   



3. Q: A radio when sold at a certain price gives a gain of 20%. What will be the gain percent, if sold for thrice the price?
   
   A: Let x be original cost of the radio.
   The selling price = (100+20)x=120x
   If , it is sold for thrice the price ,then 3*120x=360x
   So, gain percent is (360-100)=260%.
   



4. Q: The diameter of the driving wheel of a bus is 140cm. To achieve the speed of 66 kmph, how many revolutions the wheel must make per minute?
   
   A: Distance to be covered in 1 min=(66*1000)/60 m=1100m
   Circumference of the wheel =(2*22/7*0.70)m=4.4m.
   So, Number of revolutions per min=1100/4.4=250.
   



5. Q: In a college ,1/5 th of the girls and 1/8 th of the boys took part in a social camp.What of the total number of students in the college took part in the camp?
   
   A: Out of 5 girls 1 took part in the camp
   out of 8 boys 1 took part in the camp
   so, out of 13 students 2 took part in the camp.
   So, 2/13of the total strength took part in the camp.
   



6. Q: 5/9 part of the population in a village are males. If 30% of the males are married, what is the percentage of unmarried
   females in the total population?
   
   A: Let the population =x Males=(5/9)x
   Married males = 30% of (5/9)x = x/6
   Married females = x/6
   Total females = (x-(5/9)x)=4x/9
   Unmarried females = (4x/9 – x/6) = 5x/18
   Required percentage = (5x/18 * 1/x * 100) = (250/9)%
   



7. Q: If the first day of 2003 is Sunday what day is the second last day?
   
   A: As 2003 is not a leap year, it'll consist of 365 days and 364th day'll be Sunday
   



8. Q: Walking 5/6 of its usual speed, a train is 10min late. What is the usual time to cover the journey?
   
   A: New speed = 5/6 of usual speed
   New time = 6/5 of usual time
   Therefore, (6/5 of usual time) – usual time = 10min
   Hence, Usual time = 50min
   



9. Q: Two persons A and B working together can dig a trench in 8 hrs while A alone can dig it in 12 hrs. In how many hours B alone can dig such a trench?
   
   A: (A+B)’s one hour’s work =1/8, A’s one hour’s work =1/12
   Therefore, B’s one hour’s work = (1/8-1/12) =1/24.
   Hence, B alone can dig the trench in 24 hours.
   



10. Q: A man buys an article for Rs. 27.50 and sells it for Rs. 28.60. What is his gain percent?
    
    A: Profit= Rs. 1.1
    Gain percent=(Profit/Cost)*100=4%
    



11. Q: The time in a clock is 20 minute past 2. What is the angle between the hands of the clock?
    
    
    A: Time is 2:20. Position of the hands: Hour hand at 2 (nearly).
    Minute hand at 4
    Angle between 2 and 4 is 60 degrees [(360/12) * (4-2)]
    Angle made by the hour hand in 20 minutes is 10 degrees, since it turns through ½ degrees in a minute.
    Therefore, angle between the hands is 60 degrees - 10 degrees = 50 degrees
    



12. Q: How long will it take for a sum of money to grow from Rs.1250 to Rs.10,000, if it is invested at 12.5% p.a simple interest?
    
    A: Simple interest is given by the formula SI = (pnr/100), where p is the principal, n is the number of years for which it is
    invested, r is the rate of interest per annum
    In this case, Rs. 1250 has become Rs.10,000.
    Therefore, the interest earned = 10,000 – 1250 = 8750.
    8750 = [(1250*n*12.5)/100]
    => n = 700 / 12.5 = 56 years.
    



13. Q: A moves 3 kms east from his starting point. He then travels 5 kms north. From that point he moves 8 kms to the east.How far is A from his starting point?
    
    A: The total separation in east direction from starting point=8+3=11 kms
    The total separation in north direction from starting point=5 kms
    therefore distance from original point= under-root of 156
    



14. Q: In the word ORGANISATION if we exchange first with the second, second with the third, third with fourth and so on.Till last then what will be the 10 letter from right?Explain clearly step by step
    
    A: Letter A
    



15. Q: If log 0.317=0.3332 and log 0.318=0.3364 then find log 0.319.
    
    A: log 0.319=log 0.318 +(log 0.318-log 0.317)
    log 0.319=0.3396
    



16. Q: A work is done by the people in 24 min. One of them can do this work alone in 40 min. How much time required to do the same work for the second person
    
    A: Similar to ques 9 above. Answer is 60 min.
    



17. Q: In a company 30% are supervisors and 40% employees are male if 60% of supervisors are male. What is the probability that a randomly chosen employee is a male or female?
    
    
    A: Suppose there are 100 employees in company.
    30 of them are supervisors.
    40 employees out of 100 are male if there are 18 male supervisors.
    The probability of selecting a male employee is 0.4
    



18. Q: If TAP is coded as SZO, then how is FREEZE coded?
    
    A: Each alphabet is converted to its previous alphabet, therefore
    FREEZE 'll be coded as EQDDYD

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) usually conducts its campus placements through a standard procedure
The Selection Procedure consists of a written test and those who clear written test will face technical and HR Interview. The written test usually consists of four sections - Verbal, Quantitative Aptitude, Comprehension and Psychometric test.

Written Test

• Verbal Section consists of 15 questions and are to be attempted in 6 minutes. These are usually based on English words and their synonyms.
• Quantitative section consists of basic mathematics questions based on percentages, multipliation, simple algebra. It consists of 15 questions and the time alloted is 10 mins. This section is easy as compared to others, but silly mistakes need to be avoided.
• Comprehension Section consists of 60 questions with 50 mins.

Interview

The written test is followed by interviews- technical and HR. The technical interview is based on subjects you have already studied in your curriculum. You need to select your favorite subjects out of what you have studied. Computer Science Students usually prefer C, DBMS, Operating System while Electronics Engineers choose DCLD, Microprocessors and Communications.

The HR Interview is very general to test your temperament. General questions based on current afairs, general awareness, trends in IT etc. may be asked.

Every resume is a one-of-a-kind marketing communication. It should be appropriate to your situation and do exactly what you want it to do. The tips below will help you write an excellent resume.

• Choose a target job (also called a "job objective"). An actual job title works best.
• Find out what skills, knowledge, and experience are needed to do that target job.
• Make a list of your 2, 3, or 4 strongest skills or abilities or knowledge that make you a good candidate for the target job.
• For each key skill, think of several accomplishments from your past work history that illustrate that skill.
• Describe each accomplishment in a simple, powerful, action statement that emphasizes the results that benefited your employer.
• Make a list of the primary jobs you've held, in chronological order. Include any unpaid work that fills a gap or that shows you have the skills for the job.
• Make a list of your training and education that's related to the new job you want.
